Following Rules?? - Thats for the stupid and weak...

(Disclaimer: Underwritten article is a personal opinion of the author. It may not be used as reference. Anyone doing so bears the complete responsibility for any action or reaction )

Recently all over India there is a lot of hue and cry about a cctv footage showing public apathy towards a man and his family who met with an accident inside a speedway tunnel. While the man kept calling for help as his wife and son laid dying nearby for 40 minutes no one even stopped to help. Unfortunately in our country the bureaucratic experience of being a good Samaritan and helping someone is so harassing that anyone would think twice before helping anyone else. and the same applies to all including all these people showing so much anger towards the public apathy related to the accident. Each and every TV channel kept putting all the blame on traffic posts not maintained properly , public apathy, faulty governance and kept showing the interviews of the victims to raise their TRP ratings.

I condemn the negligence shown by Traffic officers, police and the public apathy completely. But what in the world was this man doing traveling in a speedway tunnel where speed limits are much higher and no two wheelers are allowed. The brazen manner in which he was traveling with his entire family inside the restricted tunnel, belies a casualness born out of many such prior violation of traffic rules. It was not like the person was with his family in a public garden and was mowed down by a truck and I would say that the faults for this incident lies at all levels both with the government and us. The apathy of the public and faults of the government and the traffic police have already been flayed down by the media so I don't want to elaborate more on this point.

What I would like to write about is a habit which is quite common to all of us and is a much more grave issue. The issue is our disrespect and casualness while following rules. Such endemic is the problem that following rules or laws are considered to be for stupid and unintelligent. If you can shout for and if you have the correct connections then there is no need to follow the rules. Following rules is in fact considered a sign of being weak and dumb. Attitude like above is what results in incidents like in Jaipur. The government has made the laws, but instead of following it ourselves we will first find a way around the laws and then when we get into trouble for doing it, we will curse like hell has been let loose and blame everyone else except for ourselves. It is so easy to sit back and put all blame on the government for not being able to implement the rules correctly, isn't it? Any Government is only as good as its people. They are from us and reflect our own habits albeit in a more magnified manner. When we ourselves are corrupt and break rules with impunity, then on what basis can we blame the government ? We are a country of more than 1 billion, does the government needs to hold each of our hands and make us cross the streets? The government instead has made laws. All laws are there for proper and healthy functioning of the society as a whole. If we don't follow the law then accidents will happen and this fact simply cannot be changed period. Respect and abide by the laws, or simply reap what you sow.

Yes, all us have to develop an attitude of following rules. Some one has to start. The blame game has to end. When many of us will respect the rules then the public perceptions will gradually change and violating rules will not be considered an achievement but will be punished as it should be.

You are right when you say we think it is weak and dumb to follow rules - not macho enough. Sometimes we also feel, if you can't beat them, join them - or else be stuck in the same spot being polite or goody-goody.
